Christmas day

Well, this was not exactly how we planned our day to turn out! We were hoping to have a quiet day, visit the zoo, and just relax. But it did not turn out that way. Andrin has been dealing with an ear infection for  2 1/2 weeks now. We have seen the pediatrician several times. It all started with fluid coming out of his ear. We started him on antibiotics right away. But after a week, he still was not better and the pediatrician suspected that he was resistant to that kind of antibiotic. We had the results from the lab on Monday and sure enough, Andrin was resistant so we switched him to another antibiotic last week. He seemed to get better and just before Christmas, we saw the pediatrician again to make sure that we were heading in the right direction. Andrin was not complaining about his ear as much and there was not as much fluid. Saturday night, Andrin woke up in the middle of the night several times and had a high fever and was complaining about his ear again. Sure enough, there was so much fluid draining out of his ear like never before. We were concerned about the fever and ended up in the emergency room after talking with the pediatric emergency doctor. We arrived there around 10.30 am and returned back home around 4.00 pm! What a wonderful way to spend Christmas day! I mean NOT! Andrin was a big trooper. They first examined him in the pediatric emergency room. But then they also sent us to another part of the hospital to a special for his ear. By then, he was so done with the hospital (who could blame him?!), that he did not want her to look into his ear. They suspect that he has an infection because of his tube! That means that they switched him on another antibiotic and also some pain medication. We will have to call after the holidays to get an emergency appointment to see what to do next. The doctor was talking about the need to drain his ear and clean it, but that might be difficult with his pain and his refusal to have anyone touch his ear. Poor boy!
